The lake front is set up to be developed into a tourist destination.

According to a statement from the office of Governor Jack Ranguma, the Lake Front Development office will ensure that employment opportunities are expanded for the many young people currently jobless in the area, providing employment in the formal and informal sectors.

“In line with the plan, UN Habitat has undertaken a planning exercise supported by analysis of legislation and overall economic feasibility of the area, resulting to a Concept Plan. We now want to put into action these plans that also include turning the City to face the Lake,” said Ranguma.

He stated that various partners have already committed to the initiative.

Projects lined up for implementation include the construction of a new port in Kisumu which will supplement the planned 172-kilometre Ahero-Isebania highway that is expected to boost trade with Tanzania, the grand project traversing four counties– Migori, Kisii, Homa Bay and Kisumu– is expected to improve trade in the Lake Victoria basin.

“The rehabilitation of the Isebania-Kisii-Ahero section of the Tanzania-Kenya-South Sudan Corridor will facilitate cross border movement of passengers and freight, and further enhance access to regional markets,” said Ranguma.

He added that it is with this in mind and through many engagements that he has seen it fit to have a focal point in former City manager Dorris Ombara that will see the quick and rapid deployment.
