Nakuru County secretary Joseph Motari has denied claims that the county is working with the outlawed Mungiki sect to harass hawkers.
In a brief with journalists at his office on Tuesday, Motari said that the county is using, and will use, the right channels to evict hawkers from the Central Business District (CBD).
On Monday, Nakuru Hawkers Association chairman Simon Ole Nasieku accused the county of working with the Mungiki.
Nasieku said that the county was using the police and Mungiki to forcefully remove hawkers from the CBD.
“We have information that the county is using Mungiki to evict hawkers from the CBD,” he said.
The hawkers have also accused Governor Kinuthia Mbugua of using the office to harass them.
He alleged that on Saturday night, Mbugua issued orders to Mungiki sect members to demarcate a new space for hawkers at Nakuru CBD.
The hawkers said that they will move out of the CBD only when they will be shown an alternative place to conduct their business.
Motari said that the county will use the right and appropriate channels before conducting any evictions.
The secretary further said that the county has often engaged all leaders before making decisions and would continue to do so.
