The county government of Uasin Gishu has launched an exercise that will see farmers who were affected by this year's fall armyworms and drought registered.
According to the outgoing Agriculture County Executive Dr. Cyril Cheruiyot, registration process will enable them know the exact number of farmers affected even as they seek for national government's hand in providing compensation.
Speaking in Eldoret on Wednesday, Dr. Cheruiyot said a majority of farmers affected in the county are from Moiben and Soy sub-counties.
"Most of those farmers took loans from baking institutions and they are expected to pay back but with low production due to drought and army arms invasion it will be a tall order for them and this is why our governor has approached the national government over the possibility for some cash to compensate them," he said.
"Already registration process is ongoing and we shall know the way forward soon," he added. It's expected that there will be a significant drop in maize production in the county this season due to the extended drought and armyworms that hit farmers this year.
