County government of Uasin Gishu has set aside 1,700 acres of land to be used as game reserve along the boundary of Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo/Marakwet County.

The land in Cheborwa is expected to be a home of different types of wildlife aimed at becoming a tourism destination in Uasin Gishu and North Rift.

Environment, Tourism, Water and Wildlife CeC Mary Njogu said her department was working with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) department to ensure a conducive environment for the wildlife.

“We have put every mechanism in place to ensure that the project succeeds with an aim of enabling the county to earn more revenue through the venture,” she said.

Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno said the county government has already started fencing the land ready to embark on the project.

“We are set to bring into the game reserve different kinds of animals which include giraffes, gazelles, tiger, leopard among other animals which can adapt the area environment, as advised by experts from KWS,” he said.

Chemno appealed to the neighbouring Elgeyo/Marakwet County to support the initiative saying the county will also benefit from venture.

He also appealed to the Governor Alex Tolgos to crush claims by an MCA in his county that threatened to thwart the efforts of Uasin Gishu completing the project in the area saying the land belongs to the Elgeyo/Marakwet County.
