Rural Electrification Authority (REA) CEO Peter Mbugua said the solar project is expected to ease power supply to North Eastern Kenya which is currently greatly underserved.

Mr. Mbugua said they have set up more than 300,000 solar panels which have been spread over an 80-acre piece of land in North Eastern.

Mr. Mbugua said that once the project is complete, the plant will be connected to the national grid and the power generated will also be consumed in other counties.

Speaking during an inspection tour at the plant on Tuesday, the CEO added that the plant will light over 200,000 households adding that the plant will inject an additional 54 megawatts of power into the national grid.

“This project is expected to be completed by September this year as the country moves towards adopting emerging clean energy technology.”

“Electricity generated from the plant will be fed to the national grid and thus increase the electricity supply capacity in the country,” said Mr. Mbugua.

He added that the project is being implemented by the Kenya government after the government secured a Sh13.5 billion loan from the Exim Bank of China.
