Over 1000 workers from Tharaka Nithi have been suspended by governor

 Muthomi Njuki.

The move is aimed at cutting the county wage bill.

Those suspended include 660 casual workers, 289 with contracts and 112 nurses hired during the ongoing strike.

Speaking on Monday, Njuki said that some of the workers are cronies of former senior county staff.

“Tharaka Nithi is a very small county to have 6,000 workers. We cannot pay people for doing nothing,” Njuki said.

He said due process was not followed before employing the 112 nurses to replace the 600 others who are on strike.

“It is very disturbing that some of the nurses employed are quacks,” Njuki said.
