The members say the phenomenon could lead to an outbreak of diseases.

During a fact-finding mission, the members were shocked to realise that only few toilets were used to serve more than 1,000 people in the three markets on a daily basis.

Addressing small scale traders at the market, the trade committee chairman, Michael Wang’ombe, appealed to the county government to speed up its efforts of upgrading the market.

“We fear that there might be an outbreak of cholera or some other waterborne diseases if nothing is done urgently,” he said.

Wang’ombe said that he was shocked after realising that traders at the market were not provided with clean drinking water. He said they were going to lobby for funding as the toilets were overflowing yet the facilities dealt with fresh food.

He also called for the erection of floodlights during the upgrade as well as the construction of more toilets, saying that poor working conditions hindered development.

At the same time, Viwandani MCA Eunice Muriithi said that more than Sh100 million was needed to repair the markets. She said that the problem got worse whenever it rained as toilets overflowed into the market.
