The Mombasa County Government has embarked on an exercise to clear beach access roads. The exercise which will be initiated by the Transport and Infrastructure department will also see buildings constructed on the roads demolished. The Governor Hassan Joho-led administration has warned private developers against setting up structures on the open space leading to beaches in the county, adding that the land will strictly be used for the construction of access roads. The county has raised concern over the move by a section of private developers accused of land grabbing to set up different structures on the roads, blocking access to beaches.Speaking on Tuesday when he inspected the demolition of a wall that had been built on a public access road leading to a beach adjacent to the Nyali Barracks, Mombasa Sub County Coordinator Abdurrahman Idris vowed to open up all access roads and public areas.Idris said the move is aimed at curbing land grabbing; a situation which he said has crippled development and planning in the county.“We are determined to open up any previously blocked roads. We will bring down walls and obstacles and we have already given notices for the same,” said Idris. The Transport department is currently in the final stages of upgrading the roads through graveling, compacting and laying of cabros.
