The Garissa County Government has announced plans to build a camel slaughterhouse in the far-flung devolved unit.
A dispatch from the Agriculture department says the investment will be the first in East and Central Africa signaling hopes for the county and the country to reap big from the business.
Garissa is mainly inhabited by pastoral communities and camels are a common feature in the county headed by Governor Ali Korane.
"The investment is the first in East and Central Africa," the dispatched released on Tuesday said.
"There is growing demand for camel meat and Garissa's first target is the Kenyan market before export opportunities can be exploited."
The announcement comes exactly five years after the county government announced plans to increase production of camel milk as demand rises both locally and internationally.
The county government said the first target for camel meat is Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and other key towns in the country.
The county, however, did not reveal when construction works for the slaughterhouse will kick off.
Members of the Somali community have a steadily growing increasing demand for camel products both domestically and externally.
One of the international market Garissa county targets to export camel products is Somalia as well as the Middle East.
