Maternal health services in Uasin Gishu are set for a major boost after the county government gave a green light for the construction of a 70-bed capacity maternity wing at West Clinic and Maternity Centre.

The county's health department handed over the construction site to contractors on Thursday.

Eldorosta Construction company has been tasked to set up the facility that will be one of its kind in Uasin Gishu.

Construction works are expected to begin within the next two weeks, with the contractor already assembling equipment.

Speaking during the handing over of the site, County Health Services Chief Officer Wilson Kemei challenged the contractors to ensure the project is done in accordance to the acceptable standards.

"This being the county's flagship project, quality and time is of essence keeping in mind that the governor has been passionate about this project," Kemei said.

Contractors were also asked to ensure they involve as many locals as possible in the available jobs for the project.

"We need to see this project benefiting the locals. Casual jobs and other basic jobs like supply of materials should be given to locals," said the Health Services Chief Officer.

"There are students who graduated from Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) under the county scholarship programs, they should also be considered for some of the available jobs," he added.
