Kiambu County government Agriculture Department is set to distribute Greenhouses to the county residents today (Tuesday) as promised earlier by Governor William Kabogo.
The county had earlier moved to training farmers from the area and agricultural oriented groups to discourage the full dependence on the seasonal rains and and to encourage new technology methods of farming.
The county Agriculture Executive Monicah Waiganjo said that the county depends much on the farming and agricultural services saying that 17.4% of Kiambu’s income are generated from the Agriculture Department.
Waiganjo who is expected to disburse the greenhouses to the groups, said that the county has at the moment been hit by a blow after climate change which saw the reduction in productivity of the farm produce which the residents depend on to earn a living.
“The county is at a risk of being hit by famine as the climate has experienced a change and our people are at a risk of starving. Let us unite and fight this challenge by engaging new and modern ways of farming,” said Waiganjo.
She added that the county is concerned and wish to help its residents tame drought and famine in some parts of the county citing the affected areas like Gatuanyaga, Kalimoni and Nyashaba area.
Waiganjo said that all the farmers and agriculture groups are expected at the event in Kiambu town and that they will be served with the greenhouses which they will be helped to fix and the working of the same after the training offered to them over the past week.
The greenhouses have cost the county Sh21 million according to the Executive member.
Waiganjo was speaking to the press this morning in Thika sub-county offices before leaving for Kiambu for the disbursement.
