The county government of Uasin Gishu is in course to becoming the first devolved unit in the country to set up a factory that will use solid waste to generate power.

This will be facilitated by a joint partnership between the Swedish Norrkoping Water and Waste company and the county government of Uasin Gishu.

According to governor Jackson Mandago, the project is expected to begin before the end of next year.

"We are looking at the beginning this project as early as next year. The investors will bring in technology and equipment and our input will be much on providing land where the factory will be set up and of course, the solid waste that we have," Mandago told the press at the county headquarters in Eldoret after a courtesy call from the governor of Ostergotland county in Sweden Elisabeth Nilsson.

"Once the project will begin we expect the generated power to be injected to the national grid and in return, we shall discuss with Kenya Power on how investors coming in at the Plateau industrial park will get subsidized electricity," he added.

On her part, Ms. Nilsson said the project will help not only make the environment cleaner but also benefit locals through power generation.

"I really hope people around here will help in garbage collection and the part in the solution to solid waste management," she said.
