The county government of Mombasa has unveiled plans to increase the women empowerment budget from Sh120 million to Sh200 million. Mombasa Gender, Sports and Cultural affairs CeC Kevin Munywoki Kyalo said the government is committed to improving the welfare of women in the next five years.Kyalo noted that the issue of gender-based violence has affected the county in different ways, adding that it must be addressed with immediate effect. Kyalo was speaking on Monday during an event to mark 16 days of activism.“Tackling this issue of gender-based violence is embedded on how we are going to ensure there is economic empowering of the women, the youth and the disabled,” said Kyalo, as quoted by Baraka FM.The function was also attended by Dr Godfrey Nyongesa Nato the county head of the Environment, Waste Management and Energy docket and Sauti ya Wanawake chairperson Fatna Faraj.Nato assured residents that the county government is putting in place measures to address issues affecting them in various ways such garbage, education and health-related services among others. On her part, Faraj said cases of rape have become rampant in the county and urged different stakeholders to step up their fight against the vice.
