Dairy farming in Uasin Gishu is set to receive a major boost following the county government's plan to set up at least 46 milk coolers.

According to the County Executive in charge of the Agriculture department Samuel Yego, the milk coolers will be spread across the county with the emphasis being on high-milk producing wards.

Speaking in Eldoret town on Saturday, the CeC said the move is aimed at improving the quality of milk and reduce losses that come as a result of poor storage.

"Many farmers incur losses due to poor storage and handling of their milk but with the coolers near them, there will be a significant drop on the loss and an improvement on quality," Yego said.

"This will mean more income to a farmer and subsequently improving livelihoods which is the key reason for this project," he added.

The Agriculture CeC further asked dairy farmers to join cooperatives so as to maximize the available opportunities.

"Once the farmers are in cooperatives, it will enable them to pull resources together and cut on transport cost as it will be much cheaper to transport their milk to the coolers as a group rather than an individual," noted Yego.
