The Nairobi County government has announced plans to put up more street lights in Kibera to combat mugging incidents as well as sustaining a 24-hour economy.
According to a news statement published in the Nairobi County magazine, plans to have additional street lighting systems in the city are underway, with the main centre of focus being the slum areas where the city's biggest population reside.
"We are committed to making Nairobi City a safe place with a realistic 24-hour economy. We have commenced plans to have additional community light masts and street lighting systems erected in crime-prone areas like Kibera and Mathare as well as the rehabilitation of faulty street lights in other parts of Nairobi County to the tune of up to Sh953 million," read the statement in part.
Kidero’s government says that street lighting in the city has led to a massive reduction of crime-related incidences from 1200 to the current tally that lies at 300 cases a month. However, it also cites vandalism as the main challenge facing the county.
