The move, noted Gatabaki, is aimed at spurring production in the rural areas as well as enhancing farmers’ accessibility to markets.

"When the project is completed, it will impact positively on agricultural production in the rural areas and access to markets and other facilities," said Gatabaki in Thika on Tuesday.

The CeC also announced plans to expand various roads connecting Thika town to reduce traffic congestion.

Among the roads that will be expanded in the next six months include Thika-Metrofill, Karatina-Garissa Road, expansion of Chania River Bridge near Bluepost Hotel and the disputed Thika-Gatitu Road.

"We realise that traffic congestion is a major challenge in Thika town. It results in wastage of fuel and time, accidents and air pollution and therefore it is not an issue we can take lightly," added Gatabaki.

The public has therefore been asked to brace itself for even more traffic congestions during the construction until the affected roads are completed.
