Mombasa residents and other environmental stakeholders in the county have been assured that they will be fully involved in the introduction of the new waste collection levy.Mombasa Environment CeC Dr Godffrey Nyongesa Nato said the county government will not impose the levy without proper all-inclusive deliberations.Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday, Nato said the garbage management issue within the county should involve all stakeholders and residents. He said the levy was not meant to punish residents for generating garbage in their households, but ensure they live in a clean environment. The CeC said he fully supports the introduction of the levy and assured residents it will be implemented after consultations with all parties.“We need to take such moves because Mombasa hosts everyone from every corner of the country, so the waste generated is very high compared to other counties within the Coast region,” he said.Nato assured residents, environmental stakeholders, and the business fraternity within the county that all their views and ideas concerning the move will be considered before the implementation of the levy. This comes after Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on Monday announced the county’s plan to introduce the levy. The move was however opposed by the Environment Active Team which termed it as victimisation.“We want the county government to use the already existing resources to manage solid waste and not charge us more and deliver poor services to dwellers,” said Ben Wemali, the lobby group’s chairman. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
