The Mombasa County Government will today (Tuesday) join the rest of the world in marking the World Diabetes Day.Officers from the county’s department of health will offer free consultation and screening of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases at the busy Likoni ferry channel.The team of professionals from both the county government and its partners will also offer free screening for blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, height, and Body Mass Index (BMI).The exercise aims at helping residents who are suffering from diabetes to seek early treatment and also provide education on how best to detect and manage the disease.“Tomorrow we will join other counties in Kenya and all nations of the world in marking this important day in our calendar. I request the people of Mombasa and diabetes victims to come out in big numbers to celebrate this day,” said Anisa Baghazal, an official from the health department during a roadshow on Monday.Diabetes is a condition in which the body fails to produce insulin which converts glucose to sugar. According to statistics released by the National Health Organization, one in every 17 people in Kenya is suffering from diabetes.
