Governor Jack Ranguma said the county government will also pay hospital bills for those who suffered injuries and are recuperating in hospital.

Five of the pupils died on the spot when a car veered off the road and knocked them at Awasi, the along Kisumu-Kericho road.

The vehicle was said to have been avoiding a head-on collision with another when it hit the children.

One died later on Wednesday while receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Mr Ranguma who condemned the accident however, said the county government would move in to help foot the bills even as he called on the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and provide justice to the affected families.

The driver who was held at Ahero Police station was expected to be arraigned in court later in the day to face charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

In a statement to the media on Wednesday, the governor reiterated his commitment and togetherness with the affected families.

“Once again, I wish to reiterate that the county government of Kisumu and the people of Kisumu County are united with the parents, relatives and friends of the deceased during this time of mourning,” read the statement in part.

It proceeded: “This morning I consoled the families of the five Awasi AIC nursery kids who died following a tragic road accident along Kisumu-Kericho road yesterday, and as my deputy Ruth Odinga had said, the police and NTSA must up their game to avert further loss of lives in our roads. May the innocent souls rest in peace.”
