This follows a partnership with the NHIF that will go along way in covering those who are not able to make the monthly individual contributions to finance the scheme.

Speaking in Kisumu on Friday, Dr. Rose Ombara, the County Executive Committee Member (CEC) in charge of health stated that a feasibility study has already been done and the less fortunate identified.

She noted that the beneficiaries will start benefiting from the program during 2018-2019 financial year.

Dr. Ombara observed that Kisumu had one of the best health facility networks but lamented that the underlying problem was access to them as most people lacked medical cover/insurance.

“Only 20 per cent of the population in the county has a medical cover. It is our wish that everyone gets the NHIF medical cover, the county will carter for the less fortunate,” she stated.

According to her, over dependence on government for medical bail-outs was dealing a blow on how people enrolled for the health insurance schemes adding that cultural believes and ignorance was also weighing-down on the noble undertaking.

She urged residents of Kisumu to take up medical insurance cover and contribute for extended family members who are unable to pay for universal health cover to be achieved in the area.
