Following the scaring reports of indiscriminate disposal of medical waste at Gioto dumpsite in Nakuru, the county government has said it will hold to account those responsible.
County Public Health Officer Samuel Kingori said six privately owned hospitals could be behind the illegal dumping.
“From our investigations, it is clear that six hospitals, privately owned, could be behind this dumping which is a health hazard and we are pursuing them in a big way,” he said on Tuesday at the site.
He added that the syringes, blood bags among other medical waste were a danger to public health.
“These things that have been dumped here pose a great danger to our lives because we have water that comes from this area and when it rains, it mixes with this waste and if you drink the contaminated water, you will definitely get sick,” said Kingori.
The PHO told hospitals which had difficulties in disposing their waste to visit his office and he will help them but not endangering lives of citizens through indiscriminate dumping.
The findings follow a social media campaign launched by angry Nakuru residents who have condemned those behind the illegal dumping for caring less about their health.
