The County Government of Nyeri has set aside Sh20 million to facilitate relocation of the main dumpsite serving Nyeri town and its environs to a non-residential area.
Governor Mutahi Kahiga promised to expedite the relocation of the dumpsite that is currently full to end the agony of the residents.
The development comes as relief to Nyeri town residents especially those living around the populous Asian Quota estate where it is located who have had cope with the hazardous environment.
He said the government was in the process of acquiring alternative land not less 20 acres far away from town and residential areas.
Speaking in Nyeri town when he launched a clean exercise targeting all major towns, Kahiga promised to clean up the site and use it as a parking bay for transport trucks.
He said the move would also go a long way in decongesting the town that sometimes is rendered impassible as a result of heavy traffic.Kahiga said his administration would be actively involved in the cleanup exercise for the next 50 days as a way of creating awareness to residents on the need to maintain cleanliness in their environments.To jumpstart and sustain the exercise, the governor announced that tenders for garbage collection and the cleanup would be floated in a few days.
