Kisii County Governor James Ongwae has announced plans to put up a disaster management academy in the county which will offer comprehensive training, skills and experts in disaster management.

Addressing disaster management team on Wednesday during a launch of the training program on disaster preparedness, the county boss said the facility will soon construct an academy which will facilitate the training of firefighters and other disaster management personnel.

He added that the county was planning to set aside Sh50 million for the construction.

“We hope to have the project completed in good time so that it can empower our people with the basic needed in the sector, we have already drafted physical planning paper which we plan to include in next year's financial year budget,” the county boss said.

The programme was conducted by Mr Mark Lynde and Jerry Streich, two Fire Brigade Commanders from twin cities in Minnesota, USA.

He commended the department for its prompt response during the coordinated rescue operations, saying it had done the county proud.

On their part, the two fire brigade commanders said their cooperation with the county government was a long term commitment.

"We are here to ensure that we assist the town and county of Kisii. So far, our rapport and working relationship with the Kisii County government is excellent," said Mr Lynde.

The fire brigade commander said the friendship between Kisii County and the twin cities of Minnesota would benefit the fire department through advanced skill and training opportunities for its disaster department.
