Speaking to journalists at her office on Tuesday morning, Maina said that the move is meant to provide alternative places for hawkers to do their businesses without being harassed by anyone.

“We are planning to open new markets at Free Area, Molo and Naivasha. The increasing number of hawkers cannot be left to the existing markets in Nakuru town alone. We have to open more,” said Maina.

Maina further noted that the Wakulima Market in Nakuru town can now hold over 2000 traders dealing with farm products.

She also added that around 900 hawkers who were evicted recently from Nakuru town’s CBD have been resettled at Nasha square in Nakuru.

"The hawkers and other traders are very pivotal to the economy of this county and we cannot risk losing the revenue they bring to us through the levies they pay,” added Maina.
