The Mombasa County Government is set to decommission the Kibarani dumpsite. This comes after residents accused the county government of failing to manage solid waste thus putting their health at risk.Mombasa Environment CeC Dr Godffrey Nyongesa Nato said the county was working towards shutting down various illegal garbage collection points formed by private garbage collectors within the county. He said his department has already closed five illegal drop-off points in Kisauni, Bombolulu and Changamwe areas.Nato said such illegal garbage drop-off points were formed within residential areas and could cause possible health threats to residents.“We have already shut down MTTI, Kikowani, Bondeni, and Mama Ngina illegal garbage drop-off points within the Island and also the Changamwe dumpsite,” he said.Dr Nato blamed private solid waste collectors for causing the garbage menace within Mombasa County.“Yes we are grappling with solid waste management in Mombasa but our private garbage collectors are the ones causing the problem,” said Nato in a media briefing in Mombasa on Wednesday. The CEC however, said he will engage them in managing solid waste within the county in the coming weeks. He further sent a stern warning to residents, saying whoever will be caught dumping garbage carelessly in public places will be arrested. He appealed to residents to maintain high standards of hygiene within their households, saying all households should have dustbins.Nato also said that the county will work very closely with other environmental stakeholders within the county so as to achieve the goal of keeping Mombasa clean. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
