Uasin Gishu County government has embarked on a programme to train county Askaris to help in managing traffic in Eldoret town, which has been a nightmare.
According to CeC in charge of Roads and Transport Gideon Birir, the program will equip the officers with skills and knowledge on how to manage traffic within the town.
"The training program will start in May and will be conducted by the National Transport Authority (NTSA) in conjunction with Uasin Gishu County government where they will be taught traffic rules," he said.
Eng Birir said after completing their training, county Askaris dealing with traffic will be called Traffic Marshals and not Traffic Police officers.
"We decided to train our Askaris to help control traffic because Traffic Police officers are few," he said.
He added the mandate of the Traffic Marshals will be to man zebra crossings and controlling traffic jams.
