Kiambu county government has been asked to promote the welfare of the persons living with Disabilities.
Ambassador of Goodwill Cecily Njeri spoke to a section of disabled persons at Makongeni, Thika yesterday. He said that persons with disabilities had been neglected for too long
The constitution passed in 2010 had given them some hope. The local NGO, Ambassadors of Goodwill has organized forums to sensitize disabled persons on their rights.
“The Kiambu government should ensure that persons living with disabilities are engaged in development,” Njeri said.
Njeri expressed worries that persons with disabilities had yet to be involved in development despite government directions. Most county governments and state agencies have yet to adhere to the directive provided in the 2010 constitution.
Njeri asserted that persons with disabilities have the same rights as other Kenyans and must be respected.
“It is so sad that in this day and age we have people who discriminate against disabled persons,” he said.
He asked the government to put in place more resources that would help disabled persons access better services to improve their lives.
