Kisumu National polytechnic has launched a Sh18 million garment making technology incubator to tap into the talent and creativity among the youth.
The innovation has been funded by the European Union through the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
Governor Jack Ranguma lauded the initiative saying it will help increase the quality of products that are sold at Kibuye market.
"The initiative will allow us to stop relying on second hand clothes that have already been worn in other counties," said Ranguma.
He noted that if the right measures are put in place, the items being sold at Kibuye can be replaced by locally produced items that are not only original but also of good quality.
"I urge the youth in the creative industry to take advantage of the initiative to make clothes that can even attract international attention,“ he said.
Speaking during the launch, the principal of the institution Joyce Nyanjong said the project will not only help create employment to the youth but it will also help improve the economy of the Western region.
"Our youth have a great wealth of talent in creativity," said Nyanjong, adding the innovation will be used in making clothes that will be sold locally in markets in the region.
She said they will use it to nurture the skills of young people who have more interest in fashion.
