The Nakuru County Government has been urged to enact policies that will guarantee for the harvesting of rain water during rain seasons in order to help solve myriad water shortage challenges in the county.
The Chairman of Njoro River Water Users Association, Benjamin Mwangi observed this when he addressed participants during a Sustainable Water Supply Programme Workshop that was held at the St. Lwanga Catholic Church hall in Njoro on Thursday.
According to the community water resources activist, the county government or the county assembly should put in place laws that require that every homestead and public institution constructs water reservoirs to harvest rain water.
This, he said would guarantee that residents of Nakuru County and public institutions do not go without water.
It will also ensure that future construction works put in consideration rain water harvesting amenities in their plans and constructions.
“When we think about the amount of rain water that go at a waste, it is prudent to say that it is not right for us to complain about water scarcity. We can do a lot with the water that goes to waste if our government puts in place laws that guide this,” he said.
At the same time, Wangi observed that such measures would ensure proper rehabilitation and conservation of local natural water resources.
“If we depend on rain water for our domestic needs and agriculture, then we will not have to interfere with local natural water resources. We will enhance their rehabilitation and conservation to greater heights,” added the activist.
