Residents of Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County will have to wait longer before the Eldoret town slaughterhouse gets a revamp since there are no immediate plans to upgrade the facility that now facing encroachment.
Officer in charge of the slaughterhouse Paul Chebii said that the facility which accommodates at most 60 employees where by more than 700 cows, 748 sheep and 387 goats are slaughtered monthly has had a deterioration in health standards and was no longer safe for to dispense food services.
He cited the law which stipulates that slaughterhouses should be built 20 kilometers away from any largely populated area.
Mr Chebii said that the greatest challenge they were facing was the capacity of the facility as it was small and could only hold 30 cows, therefore leading to congestion of cattle and workers.
He further pointed out the lack of storage and treatment facilities as extra challenges they faced.
Uasin Gishu County Director for Veterinary Services Nathan Njuguna said that there have been no financial allocations for a modern slaughterhouse for the past financial years and therefore requested the county to fund modernisation of the place.
Mr Njuguna also urged the private sector and investors to invest in that field and work hand in hand with the county government to have different slaughterhouses for different animals.
