Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has challenged the county government of Nyamira to support large scale farming by helping farmers to plough their land using heavy machinery.
Momanyi, who visited Nyansiongo on Thursday said the region had experienced scarcity of food due to inability of farmers to sustain their large tracks of land through normal tilling.
“I want to challenge the county government of Nyamira to support large scale farming by enabling farmers to prepare their land in time by availing tractors to till the lands,” Momanyi said.
“We are having large tracks of land which remain unused because of difficulty in tilling. We can solve this menace by purchasing tractors which can help us perform the work easily rather than using manual means. We want increased productivity in this settlement scheme,” he added.
He accused the department of agriculture for allegedly doing minimal to improve farming in the region and took on agricultural training officers who he blamed of failing to execute their mandate.
“I wonder where this agricultural department is working. We have officers who are recruited and paid by taxpayers but they have done little to address the problems which farmers encounter. We need our people to be educated but that isn’t happening. We want large scale farmers to be enabled by proving them with mechanisms of tilling their lands,” he said.
He also called to subsidizing of fertilizers for farmers operating in the former Borabu settlement scheme arguing that it will improve productivity.
