Fishermen in Kisumu have been asked to embrace the use of modern fishing methods as a way to avoid harvesting of premature fish.
The county leaders led by Ms Loise Omoro Akinyi the Water, Environment and Natural Resources Chief Executive urged fishermen to avoid ‘reckless’ fishing that will compromise the lives of fish.
The County Executive warned that a stern action will be taken to all those who will be found carrying out indiscriminate fishing that will compromise the lives of subsequent generations of fish.
"We are not going to allow this vice to continue. When you decide to carry out careless fishing, you don’t know what that means for the rest of the residents and the future generations," said Ms Akinyi.
She added the county government is going to sensitize the fishermen on the need to use the right methods of fishing saying the use of herbs leaves many fish dead.
Ms Akinyi further said the county government will introduce to the fishermen the samples of the nets that are recommended for fishing, a sentiment that was supported by Chief Officer in-charge of Water George K’Oyier.
