Nyamira County workers are now calling upon the county government to speed up the harmonization of allowances as a prerequisite for improved services to Kenyans.
Speaking on the behalf of the workers, Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) board member Jackson Onsomu said the disparities in allowances paid to workers across departments and state agencies was brewing discontent, and were partly to blame for the low morale leading to poor service delivery in the public sector.
He said the exercise, aimed at harmonizing the perks and spearheaded by the Sarah Serem led Salaries and Remuneration Commission was taking too long to conclude.
The official added that teachers in the region received hardship allowances monthly while their counterparts working under the same conditions did not.
“Is there any justification for a class of public workers to enjoy enhanced perks while their counterparts working in the same region and under similar circumstances are denied the same,” posed Onsomu.
We want to call upon the county government to ensure that it pays their workers well so that they can deliver perfectly in their day today work.
He threatened that if the county government doesn’t take any action, they will be forced to lead them in a strike to demand for their rights.
The official was speaking during a burial of one of the senior principal at Makairo area on Saturday.
