Machakos county government workers took to the streets in protest over unpaid salaries amounting to Sh 40 million.
The workers lamented about the lack of appointment letters as they brought business to a standstill at the county offices for several hours.
The team marched in solidarity with the county Public Service Board offices to present their grievances.
Speaking to the press, Machakos County Government Workers Union branch secretary Chris Mutua said that they had issued Governor Alfred Mutua’s government with a seven-day notice to address their demands or else they will put down their tools but nothing is forthcoming.
Mutua said that the amount in question accrues from 2013 including unpaid dues owed by past government. He further said that they want the county government of Machakos to present them with permanent employment letters with immediate effect before they resume work.
“For three years now these officers have been working without appointment letters, which is contrary to the labour laws of this country. This strike is not ending until they are issued with permanent employment letters,” he said, as quoted by Star.
The team of 340 Inspectorate officers also wants the government to pay them their transfer, leave and other allowances that they are entitled to as well as the reinstatement of all officers sacked unlawfully.
“We know of 72 staff officers of Matungulu and Kangundo sub-counties who had their services terminated unlawfully. We demand that they are immediately reinstated,” he said.
