Youths and women have been challenged to take a leading role in conservation and preservation of forest in the Country.
The call was made by Uasin Gishu County Executive in charge of Environment and Natural Resources Mary Njogu who said that they are committed to engaging them in conservation and preservation of the forest.
Njogu said the younger generation is better placed conserving the environment compared to the older generation.
“It is important to conserve our environment at all times, I want to encourage the young people that the future belongs to you and it is important for you to conserve it,” she said adding that the County will continue promoting awareness on the social-economic role of water towers and strengthening of sustainable management and conservation.
The County Executive who spoke on behalf of Governor Jackson Mandago further disclosed that the County Government was committed to conservation and preservation of ecosystems and protection of all water catchment areas within its jurisdiction.
“Protecting forest has a number of advantages top on the list being reducing temperatures as well as increasing rainfall and filtering pollutants,” added Njogu.
The County official spoke while launching the Green Club and Mentorship program that brought together students from 26 schools from Uasin Gishu County at Moi University School of Law in Annex.
Speaking at the same event, the University of Eldoret Dean, School of Environment and Natural Resources Prof. Vincent Sudoi said that "Kenya needs all of us so as to achieve the 10 percent tree cover stipulated by the National Government."
He challenged the students to pursue causes relating to environment saying that it was the only way of capacity building to the youth.
