The County Government of Kwale embarked on a journey of revamping the dairy sector in 2015, by providing 156 dairy cows to local farmers.
The farmers are able to meet the daily basic needs and boast of improved nutrition and increased household income.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Kavita who received a dairy cow in 2015, confessed that his life had transformed from the day he received the cow on May 1, from Governor Salim Mvurya and his Deputy Fatuma Achani.
"Since then I have milked not less than 15 litters in a day which I sell to hotels at my home area in Mwaluvanga and Mwaluvanga Primary school. I also use some for my family," narrates Kavinga.
He said he makes Sh400-500 a day and over time, he has been able to afford to pay his bills among other expenses.
"I am truly grateful to God and the top Kwale leadership, my fellow farmers are happy for this dairy project. So far my cow has produced 2 calves which I have passed on to another farmer in our dairy cooperative without charges. This is the sweetness of devolution and good leadership," he said on Tuesday during an interview with the Governor's Press Service.
This financial year the County Government of Kwale will be giving 130 dairy cows to farmers owing to the positive impact the pilot project has witnessed.
"We have also put in place value addition mechanisms and to date we have Kidzo dairy that has majored in this through the assistance of our enterprise department," disclosed the Governor.
Mvurya said his government's aim is to empower farmers as well as improve the living standards of the Kwale people.
