A man and his wife were on Monday charged in a court in Nakuru for stealing fish from a neighbour’s fish pond. The prosecution desk told the court under the precision of Chief Resident Magistrate Samuel Mungai that David Koskei, 37, and Janet Wairimu, 30, being husband and wife were on Saturday 23 at around 8pm found harvesting fish from Pamela Gikonyo’s fish farm in Sululu village, Njoro Sub county within Nakuru County. The magistrate was told that the two who were under the influence of alcohol when they were discovered harvesting fish from their neighbour’s farm claimed that they were hungry having gone without food for several days due to poverty. The prosecution desk said that the complainant’s eldest son who caught the suspects in the illegal act having managed to harvest four Tilapia and two mudfish breeds from the ponds, had locked them up at a store in the farm before alerting police from Njoro Police post who arrested them. According to the prosecution, the suspects are lazy people who rarely seek for employment to make ends meet, but are perennial petty thieves who terrorise residents of the village. The accused however denied the charges and were remanded in custody after failing to raise a cash bond of Sh 10,000 each or a cash bail of Sh 5,000 each. The case will be heard on June 26.
