A middle-aged couple was on Thursday night arrested for allegedly applying corporal punishment on their 11-year-old daughter which later caused her death.
The couple, based in Machakos County's Kakutha location, was reported to police after allegedly beating the standard six pupil mercilessly.
Police say the parents went too far in punishing the 11-year-old after she sustained bad injuries, nose bleeding and vomiting blood. She was taken to Athithu hospital and later transferred to Kathiiani hospital where she died while receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, Athithu assistant chief Nathan Wambua condemned the incident, saying corporal punishment was against human rights.
“The unfortunate incident has happened when the child was sent to get something from the shop and delayed to return home, where the parents started beating her up in turns," the administrator said.
"She was taken to Athithu hospital where the doctors could not save the life of the young girl who had already lost excess blood and [had] severe injuries,” he added.
The chief cautioned parents against administering such punishments on small children.
The body of the child has been taken to Machakos level 5 hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, the parents are expected to be charged in court today.
