A couple in Kisii has been remanded after being found guilty of having forced their daughter to undergo circumcision.
Senior Residence Magistrate at Kisii Law Court, L Kaitanyi found the couple guilty of having subjected their 9 year-old daughter to the unconstitutional practice.
The minor, a pupil at Entanda Primary school in Kisii County, on December 1, 2014 at Ikunuma sub location, Mara district in Kisii County was subjected to circumcision by her parents namely Samuel Nyakundi and his wife Susan Kemuna.
The daughter was forced to flee from home to seek help from Manga Juvenile Home after which the children’s officer Joyce Keno resorted for legal measures against the child’s parents which made both parents to be arrested on 03/12/2014.
Mrs. Keno further asked the court to hand over the child to her aunt Nyamota, who was willing to take care of her
The children’s officer said before court that the affected family still faces a lot of challenges since the siblings are still not safe while still at their parent’s home.
“The condition at home is still not favourable for the rest of the siblings, the child’s mother sort for house help in Kisii town while the father is a staunch drunkard and does not engage in any gainful employment,’’ Kendo added.
