Parents in Kangundo sub-county have been accused of abdicating their responsibilities to their children.
Speaking in her office on Tuesday, Kangundo sub-county children’s officer, Susan Ouma said the situation has contributed to an increase in child neglect cases in the area.
“Child neglect is the most reported issue. We receive cases where one or both parents fail to provide for their children,” she remarked.
She attributed the large number of child neglect cases to differences between couples and poverty afflicting many families, adding that during the last financial year, 319 cases of child neglect were reported at the area children’s office.
However, the officer warned parents that the government would arrest and prosecute couples who fail to meet the essential needs of their children.
“We are partnering with various stakeholders to conduct sensitization programs within the region in a bid to curb the vice,” she said.
On family planning, Ouma challenged couples to give birth to the number of children they are able to support.
