Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said that he is determined to reduce curriculum course book to one.
This is after he asked the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to evaluate the course books as it is only benefiting cartels rather than the students.
Matiangi warned that he will go through all ends to ensure that the cartels are dismantled in order to fix the learning systems in the country.
“We cannot achieve better learning outcomes if children in schools have no learning materials. People cannot complain that I am putting them out of business. I have no problem putting thieves out of business,” said Dr Matiang’i.
The education CS said that even though the government has spent billions on school books, many children were still sharing them.
Matiang’i noted that this move would greatly benefit the students and parents as it will reduce the burden of reading to many books and reduce on cost of purchase.
The last course book review was in 2003 which currently stands at six different copies for each subject.
“The list is supposed to be reviewed every five years but we last reviewed it 13 years ago so we have been using the same books for long,” said KICD Director Julius Jwan.
