The salaries of Naivasha-based Shalimar Flowers Kenya Ltd, will be increased by 20 per cent and their union recognised, the Industrial court in Nakuru has ruled.
The ruling endorsed the 20 per cent pay increase negotiated on behalf of the employees in a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed by the company’s management and the Kenya Planters and Agricultural Workers Union (KPAWU).
This was an early Christmas gift for the employees as it also put to an end a supremacy battle pitting (KPAWU) and the flower company over the pay increment proposed by the Union. Justice Stephen Radido directed the Fair Trade cut-flower and vegetable firm located on the northern shores of Lake Naivasha to implement the salary increments to the workers in arrears.
And in the same court, Justice Radido ordered Moi Forces Academy in Nakuru to pay Sh 250,000 to a former bursar who was allegedly wrongfully dismissed.
The court ordered that the amount be paid within 30 days after James Simiyu moved to court claiming that his employment had been irregularly terminated by the school.
Ealier, the court heard that the school Principal, Elizabeth Njoroge, issued a letter to the claimant asking him to respond to allegations of gross misconduct prior to the sacking. The employee moved to court on November 20, 2007 demanding compensation over wrongful dismissal, terminal dues, certificates of service and allowances he claimed he was entitled to.
