Former Wundanyi MP Mwandawiro Mghanga can now smile all the way to the bank after the High Court on Monday awarded him Sh10 million as compensation for the torture he went through during the clamour for multi-party democracy.
Mwandawiro, who at the time of his arrest was the student leader at the University of Nairobi's vibrant student union SONU, was in prison between 1982-1991.
The former firebrand politician was among the few victims of the much-dreaded Nyayo House torture chambers before he was charged with organising illegal demonstrations and sedetious activities to 'topple' former President Daniel Arap Moi's government.
In his ruling which was read by Justice Chacha Mwita, Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola who handled the case said that the politician had been subjected to unjustifiable torture by the police.
He added that he was denied legal representation which is against his constitutional rights, and as such, the state should compensate him.
