A court has issued a directive restricting the Mombasa County government from evicting Khadija estate residents.

Governor Hassan Joho’s government had plans to pull down houses in the estate to pave way for the construction of a Sh200 billion housing project. The residents had filed a case against the county government, accusing it of forceful evictions that will render them homeless. The residents said they have lived in the estate for many decades thus have nowhere to go. In his ruling, Justice Eric Ogola directed the county government not to demolish the houses or alienate the residents until the pending case is determined.Speaking on behalf of the residents, lawyer Gikandi Ngibuini said the estate is the only place they can live, as some of them have been living there since they were kids.

He further said he is confident the court will grant them justice.
