Ogoti gave the directive after one of the suspects, Jeremiah Gichini Ngirita – through lawyer Cliff Ombeta – said that his security was not guaranteed.

He said his life might be in danger after he made damning claims against Chief Inspector Mike Muia.

“I order all prison authorities to provide maximum protection since the fears of the defense should not be taken lightly,” ruled the magistrate.

Ombeta informed the court that his client and Muia were good friends in the past but, because of the affidavits, are no longer close.

He added that some unknown people had mentioned to his client that the investigating officer was not happy with the new developments.

“As long as he is in this trial, the officer should not approach or intimidate my client,” he said.
