Two chang'aa traders on Friday pleaded guilty before a Kakamega court of selling traditional liquor without a licence.
Rose Ingando was jailed for six with the option of paying Sh20,000, while Ruth Andeso will serve for five months with the option of Sh15,000 for the offense.
According to the Standard, the duo were charged with selling 20 and 15 litres of chang'aa respectively on December 7, without a licence.
Ingando was arrested in Ikuywa village while Andeso was nabbed in Bushirika village.
Their clients were also charged with being drunk and disorderly. The two pleaded guilty before Kakamega resident magistrate Benson Khapoya.
In their defence, the accused said "poverty made me brew illicit drink" and asked the court to free them with a promise not to repeat the offense again.
State counsel Paul Juma told the court that the accused had committed the offense for the first time.
Khapoya said the sentences will serve as a lesson to the growing trend in the festivities of brewing illicit liquor.
