​The State violated rights of Galjeel community by denying them identity cards, the High Court has ruled.Justice Eric Ogola directed the community found in Tana River county, to make fresh applications for identity cards in 30 days.

The community's IDs were confiscated on 1990 for scrutiny whether the Galjeel community were Kenyan citizens or not. 

The Judge directed the Principal Registrar of Persons to consider fresh applications according to the law. 

In 2011, the community sued the then minister of immigration, Attorney General, Principal Registrar of Persons and minister for justice and constitutional affairs for a decision to deny them identity cards.

The community in its suit said the government should recognize, register them as citizens by issuing IDs.
