A middle-aged man was on Monday arraigned before Kisii High Court judge Ruth Sitati over alleged murder and assault of another minor.
Kelvin Omwenga, 43, is alleged to have physically assaulted Jane Onsongo early this year near Keumbu town before brutally murdering her and subsequently dumping her body in a nearby thicket.
According to prosecutor John Okapes, the respondent was arrested few days after the crime when items belonging to the deceased were mysteriously found in his house.
“Your honour, the accused was illegally found with a pullover, bag and shoes belonging to the deceased. This is a concrete evidence to incriminate him over the murder. In addition, he has other pending criminal cases before this court,” Okapes told the judge.
Preliminary investigations also showed that Omwenga has before had personal differences with the family of Onsongo over a disputed piece of land and he had persistently issued threats to the deceased’s family.
“We have recorded statements from the office of the area chief over some utterances equivalent to threats he had been issuing,” Okapes added.
The respondent was denied bail by Lady Justice Ruth Sitati despite making plea through his lawyer Wilson Minda and will remain in remand till January 5 next year when the case will be heard.
