Residents of Keumbu location in Kisii County have been ordered to cover open boreholes within their vicinities with immediate effect.
According to the area chief Clifford Ocharo, the open water points are a risk to human life and more so in the rainy season that is ongoing.
Ocharo made the order on Sunday while having a public baraza barely a week after a three-year-old child lost his life after falling into an open borehole.
“I order that all open boreholes in your homes be covered immediately and those who defy the order will be punished," said Ocharo.
He added that any homestead that will be found with uncovered boreholes will be arrested and arraigned in court.
Speakers during the public baraza called on the Kisii county government to ensure all homes are connected with water to curb such like deaths.
They said the dams had become a death trap to the residents and especially school children.
