[Photo|Bungoma County Governors' Press Service]Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati took the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) on a tour of Mt Elgon. The tour aims to have the region considered for Equalization Fund. In September last year, Governor Wangamati held preliminary talks with CRA officials in Nairobi and made a case for Mt Elgon as a marginalised sub-county whose redemption only hinged on a 'Marshal Plan' of sorts. The Commission tentatively agreed to allocate an extra Sh300 million for the specific development of Mt Elgon pending a needs assessment field visit.Speaking on Thursday as he showed the officials the best and bad of Mt Elgon, Wangamati drew them to the dearth of social amenities in the region."The region has the best soils in the region. It has the potential to feed the wider Western Kenya and yet it also has the worst roads. In fact, it has no roads at all," he said."The region's sanitation is far from functional as women walk kilometres to fetch water," he added.According to Wangamati, there is also need for substantial investment in the region's healthcare system.Speaking in Rwanda, one of the stops on the itinerary, CRA Chairperson Commissioner Jane Kiringai said as a Commission, they will be writing a report on their findings in a weeks time.
